The fall and winter festivals held throughout Korea are relaxed and romantic. Let’s go to the festivals, with abundant things to see. If you are a tourist who comes from a place where snow is scarce, the winter festivals held amidst the snow will be a special experience.

The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival (January) is popular because you can try ice fishing and winter sports, as well as eat trout (“sancheoneo”) that you caught. You can see supersized snow sculptures near Taebaeksan Mountain at the Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival (January). The Seongsan Sunrise Festival (December-January), a New Year’s greeting festival, is held on Seongsan Ilchulbong peak, Korea’s first World Heritage designated by UNESCO.

There are also festivals where various cultures can be experienced. You can experience Gangneung’s coffee culture on the street on Anmok Beach during the Gangneung Coffee Festival (October). You can go to coffee plants, a coffee museum and unique coffee shops, etc. there. You can go to the festival more conveniently if you take the Go Go Gangwon G shuttle bus (gogogangwon.com).

At the Andong MaskDance Festival (September-October), you can watch not only traditional Korean mask dance performances, but also mask dance performances from around the world, puppet shows and plays.

The Busan International Film Festival (October), a film festival representing Korea, and the Busan One Asia Festival (October), the largest hallyu festival in Asia, are planned to be held in Busan City. You must participate in these festivals if you have time, because you can come across a variety of hallyu contents including K-pop concert. 1890 Namsangol Night Market (June-October), designed like a market in the late Joseon Dynasty, gives you an opportunity to travel back in time and experience traditional culture.

What about festivals where you can see fancy lights and night views? The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival (October), where colorful lanterns create a magnificent scene, and the Lighting Festival at the Garden of Morning Calm (December-March), a tourist attraction in Gyeonggi-do close to Petite France and Namiseom Island, are popular. Fireworks shot above Gwangandaegyo Bridge, a popular night view spot, capture the eyes and ears of tourists at the Busan Fireworks Festival (October) held on Gwangalli Beach.
